- Harbor Island Apartment Evictions

Harbor Island Apartments has suddenly evicted all of its tenants,
about 400 families. This crisis threatens the safety, security,
and livelihood of people who live there. Many don't know what they
can do, where they will go. Many have vowed to stand and fight.
- McKinley Park GiveAway

The Alameda Boys and Girls Club announced it was finalizing a deal to
takeover McKinley Park. George Phillips, the Executive Director, took
out a Use Permit for two 12 X 60 temporary buildings and the Club
announced its afterschool program would begin in McKinley in 2 weeks.
All this without a single public hearing. The neighborhood
organized against the takeover -- not to fight the Boys and Girls
Club -- but to protect public property from privatization. The bid to
occupy McKinley Park was stopped in the Recreation and Parks Commission
meeting on October 7, 2004 - for now.

- NEA honors Rev. Michael Yoshii

The annual conference of the National Education Association held
over the week of July 4, 2004, honored Reverend Michael Yoshii of
Alameda as a crusader for justice for all people.
- Alameda honors Michael Yoshii

The Mayor declared October 16th Michael Yoshii Day. Many other
honors were presented to Rev. Yoshii for many years of work for
social justice. October 16th a gala dinner honoring his
achievements and helped give voice to groups fighting for human
rights.

The 230 employees of Alameda Power and Telecom who are represented by
the Alameda City Employees Association (ACEA) filed unfair labor
practice charges with the Public Employees Relation Board (PERB) when the
City of Alameda unilaterally decide to alter terms of the labor agreement
in the middle of labor contract negotiations. Read the union's press
