Save Estuary Park Estuary Frontage for public, not private use! Did you know : * Land behind AAAAA Storage on Clement Avenue at Walnut (near the Marine Base) was planned for a city park in the 1991 Master Plan for the City of Alameda. * The land is now the proposed site of 74 new housing units. * Together we can stop the development and build the park we want on the estuary! Background : The estuary frontage behind and east of AAAAA Storage has been proposed for development by BayRock Residential, which wants to build 74 housing units and a narrow strip park along the estuary. This land is currently planned as a city park. City Council approval and a zoning change would be required to build the homes. Our neighborhood is already bracing for the impact of the Weyerhauser project at Grand and Buena Vista, and we do not want uncontrolled development in this already densely settled part of Alameda. The city is not currently pursuing funding to build a large park, but is content to let the developer build the houses for sale and a small picnic area. The developer wants to buy the site that should be used for soccer games, barbecues, Rugby, Frisbee, softball, and community meetings. Friends and neighbors of this much needed Estuary Park are banding together to make sure that a true park is built on the site. Funding to save the park is currently being sought. Alamedans need to let the City Council know that we want a good sized city park on the site with a community hall, not more crowded housing. EPAC is dedicated to letting city planners know : * Recent housing development begs a large recreational and public meeting area in this location. * Alamedans want more open space on the estuary, not more housing. * Estuary Park Action Committee(EPAC) is dedicated to finding a development alternative for the site that promotes recreation, not a land grab. Key EPAC goals : Locate funding for the park. There is funding available at various levels of government, including the $12 million needed to clean the site. Participate in all planning and City Council meetings impacting the park by submitting position papers to planning and council members and being present and vocal at the meetings. Make sure that green space is preserved in Alameda. Keep the issue in the papers. Educate the neighbors. Find out what type of park Alamedans want to see on the site. Hold Council members accountable for planning decisions. What can you do to help? Sign the petition to Save Estuary Park. Circulate the petition. Attend key Alameda planning and council meetings. We need bodies and voices and above all, your ideas. Think about what the park should look like. Spread the word to Save Estuary Park. Discuss with neighbors what kind of park you want.
